Description: Sound (Narration in English, but also with Europeans speaking in their own languages), b&w, 27? min (R1 & 2 only of 3R). The Council of Europe in Strasburg, France—what it is, what it does, how it works—as seen through the eyes of its staff of simultaneous interpreters. Paul-Henri Spaak of Belgium presides. France's Paul Reynaud, Germany's von Brentano and Britain's Robert Boothby speak during a session on European unity. Robert Schuman (France), Premier de Gaspari (Italy) and Chancellor Adenauer (Germany) solemnly declare their intention to form the European Coal and Steel Community. (Paul-Henri Spaak of Belgium is seen but not heard.) This informative look-in on the Council in its early days—when it had only advisory functions—takes on historic significance as the Continent moves toward making it a European Parliament. NB: In this version, the ministers speak longer in their own voices, whereas in Version One, the narrator cuts in quite soon with a voiceover. This may be the STRENGTH FOR THE FREE WORLD VERSION, as there is more dubbing into English at the beginning. However, in the Editor's view, this version is less sophisticated than Version One, which had American actor Gene Kelly as the narrator. NARA ref. copy: VT (R1&2 only of 3R).
