Description: Sound (English), b&w, 20 min. Deals with the pressing need to modernize small- and medium-sized factories to improve productivity and working conditions. Two friends, managers of a machine shop and a small wood-working plant in northern England in the early 1950s, can't find the time to upgrade their enterprises: floors and ceilings need repair, work stations are dirty and cluttered, and aisles are blocked, lighting and ventilation are poor, work flow is a jumble, and workers lack decent amenities to wash. The managers encourage each other to make a start and their initial humbling efforts are described with wry burnout. But persistence pays off, especially when they learn to consult their workers. With little expenditure of capital (less than the managers thought), the improvements result in fewer rejects, higher production, better morale and fewer accidents. 1953. Directed by Denys Parsons. Produced by Realist Films Ltd, in association with Film Centre Ltd, London, for MSA. NARA ref. copies: VT. Also PPC, 1R.
