Shows life in the 3,000-year-old cave city of Matera, Italy, and the building of the new city on the top of the mountain, which is a solid block of soft stone called tufa. In early times the people cut their homes in the side of the mountain. The Italian government, with the help of Marshall Plan aid, builds the new city to get people out of the caves. All buildings are being constructed of tufa stone. No date given. Story and narration by John Secondari (ECA [& MSA?] Italy staffer). Director of Photography, Cyril Knowles; cameraman, Angelo Jannarelli, Film Editor, PinoGiomini, Production Manager, Enzo Muscianisi. Music composed and conducted by Franco Mannino and played by the Symphonic Orchestra of St. Cecilia. Produced by Documento Film (probably for ECA Italy or MSA Italy) and directed by Romolo Marcellini.
