Description: Silent, b&w, 6+ min. 27 Oct. 1951: Socony Vacuum Francaise opens a new refinery at Note Dame de Gravenchon, a small village on the Seine near Havre, to handle 800,000 tons of crude oil a year supplied by a pipe line direct from tankers at Havre. Visitors include Dr. O.E Bransky, Chief Petroeum and Chemical Section of ECA/OSR; Mr. Vernon, representing French Minister of the French Ministry of the Budget; and Mr. Berard, Pres. of the Administrative Council (Soc Vac). Refinery was originally built in 1933 but was burned on June 9 1940 to prevent its falling into German hands. With parent-company-supplied money and technicians and $950,000 from ECA (about 1/7 of total cost), plant has been rebuilt since 1940 to more than double its prewar capacity. After the inauguration, the Messrs. Berard and Andre speak at a banquet. See "NEWSREELS(?) (series)" for more information. NARA ref. copy: VT.
